News and More: Canby's new drive-in, Fairground Features, opens Aug. 21 (hopefully). The fire chief is among those dismayed by maskless crowds at the Molalla River. Statewide, the Covid-19 situation appears to have stabilized. GOP lawmakers call for Portland leaders and Governor Brown to do something about the riots.
Canby Conversation: Managing Canby Gifts, one of the town's newest stores, is not for the faint of heart. It opened last year in the midst of the holiday season, surviving that whirlwind just in time to be hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Maya Kinley-Hanlon tells us about it, as well as the new name and rebrand that is coming down the pike.
After the Break: A thief was stopped for taking tires from the shop without paying for them. He had a good reason, though: He forgot. You know what this is: Everyone's favorite segment, Police Beat, with Tyler Clawson.

Canby Conversation: In the midst of the unprecedented challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, our neighboring city of Aurora has kept chugging along, and is now enjoying more development and growth than has been seen in many years. Outgoing City Recorder Scott Jorgensen tells us how they did it.
After the Break: On Canby Then, we continue our look back at the early years of the Clackamas County Fair, when a dozen prized cows could draw people from miles around, and the spectacle of a Hood River man buying a bushel of Clackamas County apples was enough to make the newspaper.

Canby Conversation: In contrast to other attempts to form a more perfect society in the pioneer days, the Aurora Colony lived graciously and ended gracefully. Today, we chat with a couple of the local people working hard to keep their history alive.

After the Break: Spud gives us a taste of colony life, including a tour of the wash house and the woodshop. We hear the legend of the pickled pioneer, and try not to hurt ourselves.

News and More: Thousands of Canby students will have to wait a little longer before they can step foot inside a classroom again. A Canby summer school employee tested positive for Covid-19 this week. A large outbreak of the novel coronavirus at Marquis Hope Village, however, is now considered resolved.
Canby Conversation: In the Hopkins Demonstration Forest in Mulino, a remarkable structure is being rebuilt. Believed to be the oldest extant structure in Oregon the Molalla Log House predates Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition by at least a decade. On the Canby Conversation today, we take a trip inside.
After the Break: They say all's fair in love and war, but that doesn't necessarily mean all's love in war and fair. A war (of words) was fought in 1908 over the setting of the county fair — and Canby won. On Canby Then, we take a look back at the second Clackamas County Fair, but the first to be held in Canby.

News and More: What's in a name? We revisit the remarkable story of the town's namesake in a period of national reckoning over the country's history with Black and Native American relations. GOP leaders take the governor to task over her "ambush-style" rule requiring faith leaders to wear face coverings — even while preaching or singing. A large new industrial project could be in the works for Canby.
Canby Conversation: While most large events have been canceled this summer because of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, for the few that have been allowed to go forward, the key was lots and lots of open space. 40 acres ought to do it, at least that's what Swan Island Dahlias is hoping. Their annual Dahlia Festival has been canceled this year, but their gorgeous fields will be open to the public from Aug. 1 through September.
After the Break: One of the few sports that has been allowed to proceed this summer has been softball, governed by strict new guidelines. Good thing, too, since the Canby Rebels were named the champs of the Summer Nationals this past weekend. Coach Ty Kraft joins to tell us why a return to some normalcy is so important.

News and More: Going back to school this fall? Face masks will be required for students 5 and older. Community spread continues to be a factor in driving new cases of Covid-19 in Canby. The repaving and reconstruction of Highway 99E is coming in 2022. (We're really pretty sure this time.) And the Canby High School Band is about to make a splash on the small screen next month.
Canby Conversation: Canby's newest business opens this week: B's Bake Shoppe in The Dahlia. Owners Bethany and David Zito join the Canby Conversation to discuss their plans, their hopes and dreams — and just a small taste of the hard work it has taken to make them come true. Check them out during their soft opening week starting Friday, July 24, and on their grand opening Aug. 1!

After the Break: On Canby Then this week, we begin our series looking at the history of the Clackamas County Fair. Before the rodeo, before the bright lights of the midway, before even the deep-fried ice cream and hand-dipped pizza dogs on a stick — there was William Jennings Bryan and a bunch of Chautauquas.

News and More: The 3-year-old son of a Keizer couple with ties to Canby was found safe Saturday, after more than 17 hours alone in the woods near Gilchrist. Should districts do away with school resource officers? A youth-led nonprofit, Oregon Student Voice, is calling for exactly that. And speaking of school, parents got their first sneak peek of what that might look like this fall.
Canby Conversation: 2020 may be the worst year in history, but it's not all bad. It's also the 100th birthday of legendary composer and jazz pioneer Dave Brubeck. Local musician Ray Hardiman's tribute to the icon was initially set for April; then Covid hit. But it's back on the calendar for next month. Hey — after four months of this, couldn't we all use a chance to relax?

After the Break: While the Clackamas County Fair, sadly, is canceled, at least one traditional offering will be back on the menu later this summer. The Oregon Dairy Women and their world-famous Red Barn ice cream are going on the road this summer, and they'll be here in Canby in just a few weeks.

News and More: Masks are now required in outdoor public spaces where it may be difficult to maintain six feet of distance from others. Social gatherings continue to drive the Covid-19 spike in Oregon, state officials say, including at least two that have connections to Canby. County commissioners hit the brakes on phase 2.
Canby Conversation: The coronavirus pandemic has been a tough time for most of us. One possible silver lining, at least for content creators like local author Kyle T. Davis? Lot of bored people stuck in their homes and looking for something new to read. And, a dog runs for president? Hey — it's 2020. Why the heck not?

News and More: Ladies and gentlemen, re-start your engines: The Cutsforth’s Cruise-In is back on for this summer. The state is blaming small gatherings, including exercise classes, weddings and birthday parties for the rise in Covid-19. Several area residents demonstrated in support of police and the president over Interstate 5 this week.
Canby Conversation: Many high school sports restarted in-person practices this week, though it looked very different. Like, very different. Like football-without-footballs different. But to district Athletic Director Ben Winegar, it's still worth it, because sports "is something that really brings everyone together, at a time when we are so isolated and apart."
After the Break: Canby High School football coach Jimmy Joyce returns to the Canby Now Podcast to talk about his week back in the sun. Seeing the smiles on his players' faces has reminded him why he got into this business, he says.
