News and More: No new cases of Covid-19 were reported at the Marquis Hope Village Post-Acute Rehab center for the first week in over a month — but the total count for the Canby area rose anyway, from 118 to 127. And there will be no phase 2 reopening for the tri-county area this weekend — as key measures the counties use for tracking Covid-19 continue to move in the wrong direction.
Canby Conversation: Canby High School grad Tucker Hunter has seen more than his fair share of success in the world of competitive cheer, but his career was raised to new heights — pun, as always, intended — with a dazzling debut on America’s Got Talent last week that had celebrity judges Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Howie Mandel and even Simon Cowell, well, cheering.

After the Break: On Canby Then this week, we look at a simpler time, when the city's population numbered barely 200 — and the most pressing issue facing the newly minted Canby City Council was how to keep residents' chicken coops from encroaching onto city streets.

News and More: it was a July Fourth with no parade and no celebration at the park — but plenty of fireworks. Canby Fire is seeing a sharp increase in the number of cardiac emergencies — even as survival rates plummet. Dr. Sean Stone, an ER physician and medical director for several local fire districts, says now would be the worst time to let our guard down in the fight against Covid-19.
Canby Conversation: With zoos and most other diversions closed, and with the pumpkin patch and Christmas tree season looking quite uncertain, Frog Pond Farm in Wilsonville decided to try a bold idea one weekend: an in-car safari. Twelve hundred cars showed up, either because they all thought it was a good idea, too — or they were just so desperate to get out of the house anything would sound fun. Owner Justin Timm tells us the story.

After the Break: A man was arrested at a Canby gas station last month for trying to get into other people's cars. It's OK, though; he did have a good reason: He thought they were taxis. That's right: It's everyone's favorite segment, Police Beat, with Tyler Clawson.

Canby Conversation: Robert and Lesley Wise were given the go-ahead earlier this year on their plans to turn their 20-acre former nursery property south of Canby into a premier wedding venue — just in time for the Covid-19 pandemic. The timing wasn't great, but their vision is amazing, and they tell us all about it on today's episode.

News and More: A large crowd gathered at Wait Park Friday in a show of support for Canby police and all law enforcement. The city has closed the book on The Beer Library (sob). And though it is overwhelmingly preferred by students and families, fully in-person instruction is unlikely in the Canby School District next year.
Canby Conversation: Canby Public Library Director Irene Green and her dedicated staff worked hard for years to build library attendance and usage. Then, Covid-19 forced them to close for months. We always thought librarians liked the library quiet — but not this quiet. Also, she shares the sad news that, in a couple months, she will be checking out.
After the Break: Mail fraud, attempted shoplifting, and lots and lots of methamphetamine. That's right: It's a double helping of everyone's favorite segment, Police Beat, with Tyler Clawson.

An employee at the Canby Fred Meyer has tested positive for Covid-19. A formal recall effort of Oregon City Mayor Dan Holladay is underway.
Canby Conversation: Ten deaths have been linked to the Covid-19 outbreak at Marquis Hope Village. One of those, sadly, was Ace Jenson, a beloved former pastor who died on June 16 at the age of 89. Joining us today is his wife, Ione, who tells us about the man with whom she would have celebrated their 66th anniversary this week — if not for the coronavirus.
After the Break: On Canby Then this week, the story of Howard Belton, the farmer who did such a good job as secretary of the Canby Telephone Association the governor made him treasurer of the entire state. ... OK — it was a little more complicated than that.

News and More: Starting this Wednesday, face masks will be required in indoor places in seven of Oregon's most populous counties, including Clackamas. Meanwhile, the county and more than a dozen local chambers are pushing back against her decision to lump Clackamas County with its Portland metro area neighbors for future reopening decisions. A local group plans an event this Friday in solidarity with Canby police.
Canby Conversation: The Canby Farmers Market has been off to a great start this year, despite the coronavirus and some of the worst weather you could imagine. Organizer Alexis Purcell and Francke discuss some of their favorite vendors so far, including the amazing Chop Chop Chicken Sundaes, and what the future holds, including a surprise July Fourth market.

Canby Conversation: Meet Mitchell Underwood, Canby's homegrown comic creator, a published comic book author and illustrator at only 20 years old. A lifelong Batman fan, he specializes in dark, gritty stories where the entire deck seems stacked against the protagonist. Here in 2020, we just call that "the news."

News and More: The Covid-19 outbreak at Marquis Hope Village Post-Acute Rehab has grown to 69 total cases as of Sunday, and three deaths. The obvious question is, "How did this happen?" We share everything we know. The governor hits the pause button on counties reopening, while the Supreme Court sides with her in regard to the legality of her coronavirus executive orders.
Canby Conversation: Larry Benson, Aurora resident and owner of Benson's Corner Espresso on Ehlen Road, tells about his connection to Buffalo Bill Cody, a distant cousin whom he strives to emulate in both his appearance and in spirit. His resemblance to the legendary figure has led to some humorous moments — especially during family reunions in Cody, Wyoming.

News and More: The good news: Schools can reopen this fall. The bad news: The guidelines are such that some parents may wish they hadn't bothered. A Covid-19 outbreak at a Canby senior care climbs to 34 confirmed cases and is now one of the largest in the state. The mayor of Oregon City gets rebuked for his comments about systemic racism in policing.
Canby Conversation: Canby Realtor Donna Ellison tells the joys and travails of owning and restoring one of the town's finest older homes, once the abode of longtime City Attorney Wade Bettis. Of course, being a lawyer, with one of Canby's first pools, he had a long list of rules — which Donna and her husband found during their renovation.
After the Break: On Canby Then this week, we revisit one of the strangest and most colorful episodes of Canby’s history: the marriage of local schoolteacher Rosamund Shaw to her 16-year-old student Clifford LeRoy Samuelson in 1924. Rosamund was about 10 years older, which, we guess, makes her the original Canby cougar.
