News and More: Sadly, Canby has experienced its first confirmed death from the novel coronavirus. There will be no early reopening for Oregon City, as commissioners rebuked recent comments by the mayor and affirmed their support for the governor's stay-home order. Canby police, too, say they will not turn a blind eye to non-compliant businesses.
Canby Conversation: Mental health is the focus of the Canby Conversation today, as we approach another month of the coronavirus era — and all the fear, uncertainty and isolation it has brought. Kayla Smith, of Western Psychological & Counseling Services, and Dr. Amanda Watters, of Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies, explain what's happening in our brains and those of our children. And they offer a few simple tips to help you cope and maybe, you know, not bust through that wall right now.
After the Break: Francke's daughter, Ellie, explains what's happening with the "cuh-woan-uh vi-wuss." (It was her birthday, we had to let her do it.) Also, on Canby Then, we're revisiting some of our favorite stories from Canby's early history, in honor of the city's 150th anniversary this year.

News and More: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases linked to Country Side Living in Canby, sadly, has risen to nine. The state is threatening "serious legal repercussions" if Oregon City allows businesses to reopen in violation of the governor's order. The Joint Emergency Board passes a $32 million coronavirus relief package aimed at disadvantaged renters, workers and small businesses.
Canby Conversation: The idea of reopening an economy ravaged by the Covid-19 shutdown has risen to the forefront of discussion recently. Today, we host a far-ranging discussion on this topic between the mayors of two neighboring communities, Canby and Oregon City. Mayors Hodson and Holladay have — perhaps — differing views of the threat posed by the novel coronavirus, but very similar frustrations with the state's seeming lack of responsiveness to the challenges facing their communities — and hundreds of others across Oregon.

News and More: The first outbreak of the novel coronavirus at a Canby care facility has happened at Country Side Living, where three residents and two staff members have confirmed cases so far. Downtown Canby has lost its first business to the coronavirus pandemic. The president of Clackamas Community College runs, and runs, and runs.
Canby Conversation: We welcome back Dr. Erin Walker, of the Canby Clinic, to ask how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted her little naturopathic primary care clinic in downtown Canby. In some ways, things are better than ever. After all: She probably wouldn't have become a doctor if she didn't like taking care of sick people.
After the Break: Speaking of medicine, some say laughter is the best one, and that includes Tim Austen, of Austen's Body Shop. We ask about his philosophy of trying to find the humor in hard times. We also talk about toilet paper. A lot. And we look back on some historical bear attacks from around Oregon, because why the heck not.

News and More: Willamette Egg Farms and its parent company donated and delivered 65,000 pounds of food this past week to organizations in Canby, Molalla and Woodburn. Talk about some good eggs! The Summer of Corona has claimed two more victims, with the cancellation of two more major events at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds.
Canby Conversation: What does church look like when all the churches are empty? In some ways, it's better than ever, according to Pastor Jeff Jennings, of Canby Bethany Church. One of his concerns has been people's emotional health amid isolation, which was the inspiration behind the church's new Facebook Live Q&A series, Comfort for the Quarantined.
After the Break: Pastor Tim Davis, of Christ the King Community Church, is a germaphobe who can't wait to hug everybody. He tells us about his own experiences doing church from his living room, including the rise of the online greeters. Finally, we document what it's like being a teacher in the COVID era.

News and More: Oregon will reopen, but it won't happen as quickly as you want. The good news is that social distancing is working here in Canby, and not a single first responder has tested positive for the virus. Canby is moving forward with its search for a new city administrator. And, believe it or not, Oregon liquor stores reported record sales in March.
Canby Conversation: In a time of great uncertainty and economic strain, many folks are in need of two things: food and dignity. The Canby Center strives to provide both, and is part of a critical safety net for the area's most vulnerable. Executive Director Ray Keen tells the story of how his little nonprofit quickly transformed into a highly efficient machine dedicated to one goal: Keeping Canby fed.
After the Break: Canby Farmers Market Director Alexis Purcell shares changes in store for this year's market, including a drive-through service from 8-10 a.m. And on Canby Then, stories from the last time Canby suffered the impacts of a global pandemic, during the deadly outbreak of Spanish flu in 1918.

News and More: The Canby Fire District warns of exposure to the coronavirus, despite still being unable to confirm a positive case in the community. Mayor Brian Hodson is an optimist, who thinks we could be past the worst of this by May, if we stay home. An armed man was killed in an officer-involved shooting near Milwaukie Saturday night.
Canby Conversation: The coronavirus has caused many organizations to change the way they provide services to the community, perhaps none morseo than the Canby Adult Center, which not only has seen increased demand but also serves a much more vulnerable population. In today's episode, Director Kathy Robinson tells us what she's thankful for.
After the Break: There are few whose month of April is looking more different from what they expected than Bethany Zito, of B's Bake Shoppe, which had hoped to open at the Dahlia this month. Instead, she's kept a positive attitude and is delivering her freshly baked breads and pretzels on demand. Order yours by email at bzbakeshoppe@gmail.com.

After the Break: Matt Morrissey and the new Wayward Sandwiches were just hitting their stride when the coronavirus pandemic served up a curveball. We ask about his favorite quarantine food, and if he's had time to whip up a new recipe for peanut butter and tuna fish yet. (Spoiler alert: No.)

News and More: Coronavirus or no coronavirus, crime is still illegal in Canby. Canby Fire has asked the city of Canby to table a proposed tax abatement for Columbia Distributing, or deny it outright. The Oregon Department of Education says parents, families and students must prepare for the "strong possibility" that schools will not reopen this academic year.
Canby Conversation: For one crazy day each week, Chapala Express makes enough tacos to feed a small army. Instead, they feed Canby. It's known as Taco Tuesday, and on today's episode, owner Carmen Velasquez tells us how it happens. (Editor's note: This interview was recorded at Chapala Express a few weeks ago, when Chapala was still open for sit-in dining, and life was a little less crazy.)

Canby Conversation: The Oregon Bigfoot Festival and Beyond is coming to Canby, it just won't happen this year. We talked with J.C. and Katie Mercer about their amazing festival, and decision to move to the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, last month. Since then, literally everything has changed. Except our love of Bigfoot. It's going to take way more than one little pandemic to change that.
